Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily cloud news and commentary show. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the cloud.

The AI Ecosystem Q2 2024 Report compiles the innovations, funding, and products highlighted in AI Ecosystem Reports from the second quarter of 2024. Download now for perspectives on the companies, innovations, and solutions shaping the future of AI.

In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, I take a look at Google Cloud’s remarkable growth, examining its Q2 revenue surge, strategic fusion of cloud and AI, and ongoing innovations.

Highlights

00:26 — Google Cloud’s revenue for Q2 jumped 29% to $10.3 billion. Now, if you look back to Q1, you see that Google Cloud’s growth rate was 28%, to about $9.5 billion. So in Q2, as it got bigger, its growth rate actually accelerated, and that is a superb performance in these times.

00:59 — Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, said on the earnings call that AI infrastructure and GenAI solutions for cloud customers have already generated billions of dollars in revenue, and they’re being used by more than two million developers. So this fusion of cloud and AI is something that Thomas Kurian, the Google Cloud CEO, and his team have pulled off brilliantly.

01:26 — This allows them to continue a very, very hot streak that they’ve been on since Kurian took over as CEO at Google Cloud in 2019. Look at this performance over time. Kurian’s first year revenue was about $9 billion. Next year, 2020, it was $13 billion, up 46%. And it went from $13 bilion to $19 billion, up 47%. In 2022, it was over $26 billion, up 37%, and in 2023, $33.1 billion, up 26%.

Ask Cloud Wars AI Agent about this analysis

02:05 — Based on Q1 and Q2 and what’s going on in the market, if I had to estimate what’s going to happen in 2024, I’d say Google Cloud is going to scale to $44 billion, which would be up 33%. Again, that’s just my estimate.

03:01 — Pichai said that the new strategic partnership with Oracle for multi-cloud has greatly expanded Google Cloud’s market potential. I think in Google Cloud’s case, another big differentiator is its acquisition of Mandiant, a threat intelligence company in the cybersecurity field.

04:10 — There is tough competition in the Cloud Wars Top 10 to be the fastest growing, with a couple behind Google Cloud. Now, ServiceNow in Q1 was at 25%, Oracle was at 25%, and SAP was at 25%, with a big jump up there to Google Cloud at 29%. After this video has been produced, we’ll find out Microsoft and ServiceNow’s numbers.
