In this Cloud Wars Minute, Bob shares a recent story posted to Microsoft’s website which discusses a “huge ERP-type deal” the company won in 2019, beating out Oracle and SAP.
Highlights
00:49 — Microsoft’s deal involves something that is as mission-critical as it can get. Microsoft’s client is New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection, which is responsible for delivering one billion gallons of fresh, safe drinking water every day to 10 million residents.
01:18 — Challenges faced in this project were the new sustainability goals that had to be implemented while replacing 27-year-old mainframes. This task is more than taking old technology out and replacing it with new technology.
01:32 — New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection also aimed to build a customer-centric focus by boosting the productivity of its workers and becoming more data-oriented, rather than being driven by outdated systems.
02:09 — As it relates to the topic of Cloud Wars, Bob thinks that Microsoft has tried to portray Dynamics 365 as not much of a competition to Oracle and SAP, as the company has formed strong partnerships with both of those major cloud providers.
02:55 — Bob reports that Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 business is in the range of a $4.5-5 billion annualized business. Dynamics 365 is a fully capable ERP suite competing with other cloud ERP companies such as Oracle and SAP, which explains why there must be collaboration and competition on both sides.
