Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder Bob Evans. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud.

This episode is sponsored by Acceleration Economy’s Generative AI Digital Summit. In this Cloud Wars Minute, Bob Evans talks about comments made by Oracle’s Larry Ellison at the Oracle Analyst Summit last week regarding AWS, multi-cloud, and the world’s fastest computer.

Highlights

00:52 — Larry Ellison made a surprise appearance via Zoom at the Oracle Analyst Summit last week to answer questions.

01:17 — Ellison is passionate about multi-clouds. He said, “I just don’t get it,” referring to the idea that customers can’t take their data elsewhere once they’re in a cloud, such as AWS. In describing that, Bob reports that he used the words “bizarre,” “preposterous,” and “absurd.”

02:00 — Oracle has already built an advanced interconnect technology with Microsoft and Azure so that those two clouds can interoperate seamlessly. In this discussion, Ellison committed to Oracle doing so with every company, sharing his belief that the “old notion of isolated clouds” is “not going to work.”

02:24 — Additionally, in talking about isolated clouds, Ellison suggested that “customers are going to get tired of it” and transition to platforms that enable them to move around to various services without any associated egress or ingress fees.

02:38 — Ellison talked about open technology versus truly open technology. He stressed Oracle’s commitment to being open-source.

03:00 — In conjunction with NVIDIA, Oracle has built the world’s fastest computer, Ellison revealed. Now, Oracle is able to “do some things with large language models that nobody else can do; they perform at a higher level of speed than anybody.”

03:40 — With Oracle’s success, the company also faces challenges with such a high demand for its services — which is a good problem to have.

04:30 — Bob says that Ellison’s passion, vision, and ambition “came through as strongly and clearly as ever.” Bob perceives Ellison’s “boundless optimism” to be due to Oracle pushing its technology in new and different ways.
