Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily cloud news and commentary show. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the cloud.
In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, I’m sharing my to-do list for Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and what I think he needs to do at AWS.
Highlights
00:17 — In light of some recent Cloud Wars Top 10 developments, I want to share a to-do list for Andy Jassy, Amazon’s CEO and previously the CEO of the company’s AWS cloud unit.
00:45 — My number one item for his to-do list: sign a multi-cloud partnership with Oracle. Recognizing the companies aren’t exactly on good terms — Amazon has taken a lot of jabs from Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison over the years. But these recent developments override all the competitive considerations:
- Microsoft has set up the Oracle Database@Azure partnership
- Google Cloud has set up the Oracle Database@Google Cloud partnership
01:27 — Microsoft and Google Cloud compete with Oracle in a number of areas, but they’ve transcended those competitive considerations in favor of creating partnerships with Oracle to make life better for customers. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the Oracle partnership is a big revenue/growth driver. So AWS could stand to gain from a deal like this; Google Cloud — the fastest-growing Cloud Wars Top 10 vendor — said it’s eager to give customers more choice.
02:51 — In addition to the customer benefit, AWS right now is the slowest growing of the four hyerpscalers — growth had been 12%-13% last quarter. Then they bumped it to 17% last quarter; that’s great but it’s much slower than Microsoft’s much bigger cloud business, which grew 23%. Google Cloud grew 29%, Oracle grew 44%. AWS needs to keep up with competitors.
03:30 — Jassy said on the recent earnings call that the company has the deepest partner ecosystem, which helps make it so popular with customers. But that can’t be true unless Oracle’s part of that ecosystem. Jassy has said that 85% of IT spending it still on premise. If he wants more of that to roll over to cloud, he’s got to make an Oracle partnership the numer one item on his to-do list.
