Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily cloud news and commentary show. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the cloud.
In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, I review the last five quarters of growth rates and cloud revenue of four major cloud providers.
Highlights
00:15 — Four of the largest players in the Cloud Wars Top 10 are in a shuffle of who is in the leading position. I would say the transitional point here was from the traditional cloud, where Microsoft and AWS were clear leaders to now what we could call the “AI cloud,” in which I think Google Cloud and Oracle will displace Microsoft and AWS as the leaders.
00:52 — AWS and Microsoft are much larger than Google Cloud and Oracle. But the growth rates and the rising choices by customers to go with these disrupters says a lot about where this industry is headed.

01:20 — Looking at the growth rates of Google Cloud, AWS, and Microsoft over the last five quarters, it’s evident where the customers are going — who’s the hot company? Within that, we can also see who is starting to show the most growth momentum and winning new deals.
01:50 — Google Cloud has, by far, been the fastest-growing company on the Cloud Wars Top 10. While AWS and Microsoft have done a great job, Google Cloud has had five quarters straight of accelerating growth. As the company’s revenue base is getting bigger, it’s still growing faster.
03:12 — The Remaining Performance Obligation (RPO) is another key indicator, as it’s tied to contracted business that has not yet been recognized as revenue. Last quarter, Oracle reported an RPO of $99 billion and an astonishing growth rate of 53%. We’re seeing Oracle win a massive amount of new business rolling forward into the future.
04:50 — There are clear indicators of very powerful momentum among customers who have such a rich array of choices from which to choose.
