OpenAI is enabling users to connect personal health information directly to ChatGPT so they can pose specific health-related questions, understand their health situation in context, and have more-informed health conversations.
The new features respond to the widely embraced use of AI, as well as ChatGPT specifically, for personal healthcare use cases. OpenAI said more than 300 million people per week use ChatGPT for health-related questions—from understanding a lab result to preparing for an appointment to making sense of a conversation with their doctor.
One of the challenges that AI users face in posing health-related questions and gaining complete visibility: the context needed for in-depth answers is often dispersed across patient portals, electronic or non-electronic medical records, health apps, wearables, and more.
OpenAI is addressing the problem by giving users the ability to connect their own information directly into ChatGPT so they can compare a new result with prior tests or summarize changes since a previous appointment. This can reduce the need to repeatedly upload or explain the same details.
With a user’s permission, ChatGPT can consider relevant information that’s connected, such as medications, lab results, recent visits, and activity levels, alongside the goals and context they share. Users can securely connect information from Apple Health and supported medical records, which will typically include Epic and Oracle electronic records, depending on their specific health system’s implementation of those platforms.
After connecting their data, users can review conditions and medications, remove anything that is no longer relevant, and add details that may be missing, including family health history.
AI Models, Privacy Details
Multiple AI models are being utilized based on the user’s ChatGPT plan. GPT‑5.5 Instant, available to users on the OpenAI free plan, can recognize if urgent medical attention is needed, ask for relevant context, explain uncertainty, and/or make complex information easier to understand.
GPT 6.5 Sol, available to paid users, is positioned by OpenAI as its strongest model for health insights, ideal for explaining a doctor’s visit notes in plain language, understanding how lab results have changed over time, or preparing questions for a follow-up appointment.
Health in ChatGPT is built with layered safeguards. All ChatGPT conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit. Additional protections include:
- Information connected in Health is not used to train OpenAI foundation models or target ads
- Users decide when ChatGPT can use the information connected in Health. By default, ChatGPT asks for permission before using connected medical records and Apple Health information to personalize a response. They can approve each request or choose to always allow access.
- Users can disconnect their ealth information at any time. When they do so, data synced from that source is deleted from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days.
- Memory remains in users’ control. To personalize future chats, memories can be created from Health conversations.
OpenAI is rolling out Health to logged-in ChatGPT users 18 and older in the U.S. on web and iOS across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.
