Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily cloud news and commentary show. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the cloud.

The AI Ecosystem Q2 2024 Report compiles the innovations, funding, and products highlighted in AI Ecosystem Reports from the second quarter of 2024. Download now for perspectives on the companies, innovations, and solutions shaping the future of AI.

In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, guest host Kenny Mullican discusses Microsoft’s decision to pull the GPT Builder feature from the Copilot Pro product.

Highlights

00:07 — GPT Builder allowed users on the $20-a-month pro plan to create their own mini-versions of Copilot to meet their specific needs. For instance, you could create a GPT to help with vacation planning, planning meetings, or writing emails.

01:22 — I want to analyze its removal and tell you what might be important to think about. First off is user impact. For existing Copilot users that have used it, this is obviously going to be a little bit disappointing. This is an example of a strategic shift for Microsoft. It suggests it’s realigning toward broader commercial and enterprise markets.

02:17 — While it is a removal of a key feature, it does mean that it’ll be able to focus on additional feature development. Microsoft says that it’s going to use the time, energy, and resources that might have gone into maintaining the GPT Builder to instead add other new important features.

03:30 —The move also opens the door for competitors. There are other products out there; for instance, ChatGPT offers similar features, and with its pro license, you are still getting the GPT Builder capabilities. So, it’s not that Microsoft is completely removing the feature altogether. If you have the business or enterprise licenses, you’re still going to have it.
