Acceleration Economy is on location at QlikWorld this week. In this video from the conference, Wayne Sadin is joined by Josh Good, Vice President, Global Product Marketing at Qlik for a wide-ranging discussion on the company’s tools. Qlik is on the Acceleration Economy Top 10 Shortlist of Data Modernization Enablers.

Highlights

38 — Wayne asks Josh about his journey. Josh says he implemented QlikView at a previous company. He was automating using Excel and just wanted to make his life easier. Eventually, he moved to product marketing. He’s been at Qlik for a decade.

54 — Josh now has an entire portfolio underneath him. He oversees teams that work on data integration and analytics.

39 — Wayne asks Josh how he feels about citizen data scientists and citizen data engineers. Josh says data scientists, who are highly trained, are doing something that’s different from citizen data scientists. He’s always liked just saying “users.”

09 — “Citizen data scientist” has a connotation of people hiding in the other room doing things that the professionals don’t want them doing, but Qlik sees that relationship as collaborative.

42 — Citizen tools, Wayne points out have “allowed people to do all sorts of crazy stuff,” which has led to broken data lineage or broken data security model. Qlik’s product allows CIOs to put constraints around data while still empowering the end user.

37 — What Qlik sees with its customers, Josh says, is that “everything’s locked down or everything’s open.” And then, as they mature, they come to a center point. Really good governance, he adds, gets led by the business, because they’re getting value out of governance.

42 — Wayne thinks having a suite of tools is important, and, as a working CIO, he not having to go contract for 12 tools. Qlik has a collection of products that allows him to build the data ecosystem.

24 — Qlik’s approach is to be best in breed in all the key areas in which it operates, Josh says. It knows its customers have other technologies and use cases. So, its various software options and software capabilities integrate with other things.

15 — Wayne asks even if he had a competing product, could he use Qlik’s lineage tool? Josh says the lineage tool is not sold separately. However, Qlik aims to support customers’ solutions, even if they use other technologies. The goal is to have healthy long-term relationships with customers and partners.

25 — When it comes to Talend, Josh says the acquisition is going through regulatory approval. Talend brings data quality and connectivity. Existing customers have shown excitement.

43 — Wayne appreciates that because he knows when data doesn’t have good quality, nothing downstream matters.

52 — The conversation turns to artificial intelligence (AI). Qlik has an AI tool feature designed to guide users and provide insights. As a CIO, having this assistance instills confidence that the analysis was performed correctly, although users can still make adjustments.

38 — Qlik’s AI black box produces an output that allows users to observe the content it generates and how it was developed. Additionally, users can provide feedback to the black box, telling it to avoid certain actions and learn from them.

04— Qlik has a significant number of customers in the audit, financial services, and insurance spaces. Understanding data in detail and being able to analyze it is crucial in these industries.

27 — The conversation began with hands-on data and ended with AI, which brackets the field, Wayne notes. Josh points out that it’s not enough to have great AI insights and merely find them interesting. The key is taking action, and Qlik has various methods to prompt and automate it.

28 — Wayne Sadin mentions that having systems take action leads to significant labor savings. Josh agrees and adds that feedback on the actions taken can provide valuable insights into the decision-making process. By adding predictive and prescriptive capabilities, alternative actions can be modeled as well.
