Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily cloud news and commentary show. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the cloud.
This episode is sponsored by Acceleration Economy’s “Cloud Wars Top 10 Course,” which explains how Bob Evans builds and updates the Cloud Wars Top 10 ranking, as well as how C-suite executives use the list to inform strategic cloud purchase decisions. The course is available today.
In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, I discuss why Microsoft is doing so well and how its performance compares to that of AWS and Google Cloud.
Highlights
00:22 — Over time, there’s been a lot of talk about how AWS is the cloud leader. Yes, AWS is by far the leader in cloud infrastructure, but the cloud’s more than that. My numbers here show that Microsoft is overall number one by a wide margin over both AWS and Google Cloud.
01:54— I’m projecting Microsoft’s cloud revenue for the calendar year 2023 will be $124 billion, up 21.6%. For number two on the Cloud Wars Top 10, Google Cloud, I am projecting $33.9 billion, up almost 29%. For number three, AWS, I’m projecting 13.7% growth, for a total of $91 billion.
02:55 — Microsoft is doing more for customers on their way to business, technology, and digital transformation than any other vendor. There’s a lot to be said for the law of the cloud: getting as big as you can, as fast as you can, in as many layers of the cloud as you can.
03:25 — Now I hear from a lot of people, the Silicon Valley bubble crowd, that you can’t compare Microsoft and AWS because they don’t offer exactly the same products, or cloud services, and that’s utterly ridiculous.
04:17 — There’s four reasons why Microsoft is clearly number one:
- Its end-to-end portfolio
- The open partnerships it’s created with most major technology vendors, including Oracle
- It’s been a generative artificial intelligence pioneer
- It’s incredible scale
05:42 — I hope you find this analysis interesting and that it points the way forward toward what’s going on with customers in this wild digital revolution that we’re chronicling.
