Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder Bob Evans. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud.

This Cloud Wars Horizon Minute is sponsored by Celonis, the market leader in process mining and execution management. The world’s top 2,000 process fanatics learned to fix process inefficiencies at Celosphere, the company’s annual conference, which was held November 9th and 10th in Munich, Germany. Sign up to watch the free virtual Celosphere 2022 stream here.

In this Cloud Wars Minute, Bob discusses the new “reimagination leader in the Cloud Wars field,” Google Cloud.

Highlights

00:50 – Bob states that Google Cloud has “ousted” Microsoft as the top innovation leader.

00:59 – Microsoft is four times larger than Google Cloud. Bob says the company is clearly doing things right and will continue to do so. He says to be a key leader of innovation, players must focus on what is next to come, rather than simply maintaining the status quo. He says the focus on “differentiating towards the future” is one where Google Cloud has taken the lead.

01:36 – After attending Google Cloud Next in New York City, Bob says he was left with a few impressions. During the conference, he says, “there was AI everywhere in what Google Cloud was talking about,” and the company included very advanced ideas in their discussions of the future. He said these technologies were being applied directly to the ideas that business customers have today.

02:03 – Bob says that Google Cloud got into topics such as new applications of geospatial data and using the data cloud as a way to create open partnerships. Customers will be able to use data from any source or vendor quite easily as a result. He says to anticipate the upcoming use of intelligent infrastructure optimized for various workloads.

02:28 – Another key factor in Google Cloud taking the lead in innovation is the mindset, says Bob. Google Cloud Next was a “celebration of customers, partners, opportunity, and what the future is going to bring.” The event’s tagline was “today, meet tomorrow,” an outlook toward the future that Bob “loves.”

03:16 – Bob says the excitement shared by the team at Google Cloud contrasted the comments made by Microsoft Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff, who “lamented the fact that companies were acting in their own best self-interest to align with the changing ways of the business world.” Bob says this is an “awful outlook” for a leader of a prominent company to have.

04:20 – Comments like the ones made by Althoff are “a huge responsibility for how Microsoft is perceived,” says Bob. He says that this was “certainly a factor in his view here that Google Cloud has displaced Microsoft as the innovation thought leader in the cloud.”
