In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, I speak with Amit Zavery, vice president and general manager of Google Cloud Platform, about the exciting multi-cloud partnership between Google Cloud and Oracle.
Highlights
00:53 — Amit Zavery was at Oracle for a long time. He was a leading tech product executive there. His grounding at Google Cloud has always been about customers. “That’s what you wanted to bring this partnership together to do — to let the customers win,” I point out.
01:07 — “Exactly,” he says. He thinks the partnership validates that it’s important to hear customers. He thinks it’s great that Google Cloud has been able to make this work with Oracle. Customers really benefit from this partnership, and he believes we’re all going to be better off in the long term. I’m glad it’s happening, and it’s about time.
02:24 — It’s almost like a mindset shift. Competition is a great thing. While being a big I believer in the free market, there’s a point at which you say, “You know what? If we don’t move beyond head-on competition, we won’t be able to do the best for customers.”
Ask Cloud Wars AI Agent about this analysis
03:49 — Zavery is excited to share the main stage with Clay Magouyrk, a former colleague from Oracle. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) has advanced significantly, and the current relationship across the database, Oracle Applications, and OCI is now comprehensive.
04:25 — They’ve already gone live in four regions with the services and have interconnected 11 regions available today. They plan to triple that in the next 6 to 12 months. There’s a huge amount of demand from customers for specific regions and services. They’re working with BigQuery, Looker, Oracle Database, Vertex AI, and Oracle Applications, as well as with OCI and other technologies.
05:49 — There are a lot of joint customers between Oracle and Google Cloud. One example is Dun & Bradstreet. It has data in the Oracle Database, and it’s using Google Cloud for analytics. Another example is CME as well as Sabre, both big customers of Google Cloud and Oracle.
07:09 — Zavery hopes that, over time, this multi-cloud trend leads to more relationships and integration. The Cloud Wars may be becoming more peaceful. Hopefully, the best products will win — that’s how it should be. We’ll see what happens, but it shows the power of customers.
