Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder Bob Evans. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud.
In this Cloud Wars Minute, Bob offers his thoughts on AWS’ latest digital sovereignty pledge.
Highlights
00:11 — At its annual re:Invent conference in Las Vegas this week, AWS announced its digital sovereignty pledge. Bob feels that the language used and positioning the company took in making this announcement is “a lot of nonsense” and explains why.
00:43 — Bob feels that AWS is really admitting that Google Cloud and Microsoft are “way ahead” and “whipping” AWS in the sovereign cloud era.
01:07 — AWS says it has feature-limited alternatives as a part of this pledge — but in reality, does not offer any alternatives at all. The notion of a pledge is nice, “but if you’re going to have a pledge, have the stuff to go with it,” Bob adds.
01:56 — AWS has pledged to introduce new features — but at some unknown point in the future. Bob suggests that it’s bizarre that customers are telling AWS, “We are being forced to choose non-AWS stuff.”
02:27 — The real substance of this pledge is that AWS is stating that it will “create new stuff around the sovereign cloud.” Who isn’t doing that these days?
