
One of the marvelous things about being a privately held company valued at $852 billion is that some people believe you’re capable of doing anything merely because you say you’re going to do it.
But, one of the tricky things about competing in the Cloud Wars is that, sooner or later, your starry-eyed dreams must confront and fuse with the gritty world of enterprise reality, in which visions of grandeur count a whole lot less than real stuff that actually works.
In that context, I was puzzled to see that a LinkedIn post earlier this week from OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar outlining the company’s AI stack made no mention whatsoever of the “AI superapp” that OpenAI teased so masterfully back in March.
Remember? Oh wow — the company that gave us ChatGPT and Codex is now going to launch an AI superapp that will not only track your supply chain but also clean your oven, balance your books, tighten those abs, and execute weekly payrolls flawlessly, all while managing your trucking fleet, too!
After all, this shiny new thing was not going to be just another “app” — no indeed. By golly, OpenAI was going to one-up the promised chicken in every pot with the world’s first “AI superapp”!
But, that was then (an OpenAI blog post dated March 31), and this is now (almost five months later), and while much of Friar’s updated overview (dated Aug. 24) matches very closely what the company wrote on March 31, she says absolutely nothing — zip, zero, nada — about any “AI superapp.”
So, why does this matter? Here are a few compelling reasons:
- I believe OpenAI’s March 31 blog post prominently featuring plans for the AI superapp was the primary spark for all the speculation about the crazy notion — or was it so crazy?? — that IT teams would start to vibe-code ERP systems.
- Or that, as foretold a few years back by Satya Nadella when he predicted AI would “hollow out” enterprise apps and cut their value significantly, the “AI superapp” would become the wrecking ball for traditional enterprise apps.
- It also could have been interpreted to mean that OpenAI intended to compete head-on against SAP and Salesforce and Oracle and Workday by virtue of this mysterious AI superapp.
- And it triggered a lot of anxiety because the prevailing wisdom was that AI agents were going to replace apps — so why is the ultimate AI company cooking up an app, even one that might earn the name “superapp”?
Where Is OpenAI Headed?
So let’s take a look at the company’s comments from March 31 — when it first dropped the “AI superapp” thingy — and Friar’s comments from Aug. 24.
OpenAI blog post dated March 31:
The OpenAI flywheel is simple. More compute drives more intelligent models. More intelligent models drive better products. Better products drive faster adoption, more revenue and more cashflow. That gives us the ability to reinvest and deliver intelligence more efficiently to consumers, enterprises, and builders around the world.
Building an AI superapp
That is why we are building a unified AI superapp. As models become more capable, the limiting factor shifts from intelligence to usability. Users do not want disconnected tools. They want a single system that can understand intent, take action, and operate across applications, data, and workflows. Our superapp will bring together ChatGPT, Codex, browsing, and our broader agentic capabilities into one agent-first experience.
This is not just product simplification. It is a distribution and deployment strategy. By unifying our surfaces, we can translate advances in model capability directly into user adoption and engagement. Our consumer scale becomes the front door for enterprise usage, as familiarity in daily life drives adoption at work.
CFO Sarah Frian LinkedIn post dated Aug. 24:
The defining opportunity in AI is to turn breakthroughs into tools that help people do more, then make them steadily more capable, affordable, and widely accessible. In an industry moving at extraordinary speed, we are running our race on our terms. Our finish line is the mission: ensuring AGI benefits all of humanity.
Delivering on it means building the full AI-native stack as one compounding system: compute → frontier models → a unified platform → consumer and enterprise products → AI-native devices.
Compute expands what researchers can attempt. Better models make every product more useful. A unified platform helps developers and businesses build faster. Consumer and enterprise adoption creates real-world feedback and demand. Revenue funds the next cycle of compute and research. AI-native devices will make intelligence more natural in everyday life. Each layer strengthens the rest.
What the heck happened to the AI superapp, which back in March was so essential that it warranted its own subheadline and section in the OpenAI product strategy?
Final Thought
Well, perhaps it was just an overblown name that OpenAI has (wisely) reconsidered.
Perhaps the enterprise-apps companies that OpenAI must find some way to work with shared some feedback that made the AI superapp seem less super.
And, perhaps some customers heard about it and let OpenAI know that the very last thing they want or need right now is an AI superapp.
I suspect it was some combination of all of those factors.
And I’m guessing that no OpenAI executive will ever again use the term “AI superapp.”
