AWS and NVIDIA Scale AI Infrastructure With 2 Million Additional GPUs

When it comes to AI infrastructure, AWS and NVIDIA are somewhat of a power couple. The two companies have a longstanding partnership dating back 16 years, focused on delivering NVIDIA-accelerated computing through AWS.

Now, the two powerhouses have announced a staggering expansion of this existing partnership which will, among other things — but this is certainly the standout headline — include the deployment of 2 million additional NVIDIA GPUs across AWS infrastructure between 2027 and 2028. The aim, according to Amazon, is to meet surging demand for AI infrastructure “from frontier labs, global enterprises, startups, and governments.”

Next-Gen Workloads

The 2 million additional GPUs, building on the more than 1 million NVIDIA GPUs AWS has previously committed to deploying beginning in 2026, will include NVIDIA’s Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, and Rubin Ultra architectures. They’ll be deployed alongside NVIDIA Vera CPUs and other technologies, creating a powerful foundation for next-generation AI use cases.

“Customers want the freedom to choose the best tools for their AI workloads, and they want confidence that everything works seamlessly together,” said Matt Garman, CEO of AWS. “That’s why we’ve invested deeply with NVIDIA to make AWS the best place to run NVIDIA AI technologies, optimizing performance across our infrastructure from networking and security to deployment.

“This expanded collaboration gives frontier labs, enterprises, and governments even more ways to build and deploy AI on AWS.”

This push is being driven by growing demand for next-generation AI workloads, particularly agentic AI and physical AI. On the physical AI side, Amazon Robotics will work with NVIDIA to integrate its full-stack physical AI platform, helping ramp up the development of Amazon’s robotics projects. The broader NVIDIA infrastructure, including that mind-boggling deployment of GPUs, will provide the compute and tech needed to run these projects at scale.

Wider AI Projects

I mentioned at the start of this article that the expanded partnership between AWS and NVIDIA had more to it than just the headline-grabbing “2 million additional GPUs.” One of the most significant parts of the announcement is what the two companies intend to do together in the AI factory space.

AWS and NVIDIA will build AI factories for the U.S. government, enabling the delivery of “100,000 GPUs on AWS’s secure infrastructure for federal and national-security workloads.” This puts AWS in a very strong position in one of the most competitive and potentially lucrative areas of the AI market.

Final Thoughts

What this expanded partnership demonstrates is the realization of what has been discussed among governments, businesses, and other organizations for years now: that demand for AI is going to continue growing rapidly. AWS and NVIDIA are preparing for an AI market that will require a level of infrastructure that simply doesn’t exist today, because it hasn’t been necessary for current workloads.

For AWS in particular, this expanded partnership strengthens its position as a major player for organizations looking to build and deploy AI at scale. For NVIDIA, while neither company has disclosed the financial value of the expanded partnership, the value of the GPUs alone could represent tens of billions of dollars in revenue.

For the industry, and in particular for customers that want to scale at pace, this latest development could really matter as demand for AI compute continues to accelerate.
