Agentic AI Wars: Will Microsoft, AWS Match Google Cloud’s $750 Million Ecosystem Investment?

Complementing its massively expanded portfolio of agentic AI technologies with an unprecedented $750 million investment in its ecosystem, Google Cloud has seized the high ground in the intensifying Agentic AI Wars and we’ll now see if Microsoft and AWS choose to keep pace.

At its big Next event last week in Las Vegas, Google Cloud hammered home the point that every layer of its complete AI stack — spelled out in the image below from CEO Thomas Kurian’s opening keynote and spanning TPUs to domain-specific agents — is being optimized for agentic AI. (You can see great summaries of all the product launches here and here.)

But for customers to realize the potential of all that new agentic AI wizardry, the vast Google Cloud ecosystem has to step up its game in equal measure.

For precisely that reason, Google Cloud is committing three-quarters of a billion dollars “to deliver new resources and incentives to partners in its 120,000-member partner ecosystem to help accelerate joint customers’ transformations with agentic AI.”

Not so long ago, this sort of initiative would fall under the category of “market development funds” for “the channel” and in many cases didn’t amount to much more than cash handouts, with vendors hoping their resellers would put to some sort of good use in helping “develop” a market that the vendors hoped would emerge.

But just as the explosive world of agentic AI has sparked a boom in product development and enhancement at a pace the world has never seen, so too is it triggering profoundly different ways in which technology ecosystems partners need to grow and adapt to meet the expectations of customers in this wildly disruptive AI Era.

And the creativity, innovation, and commitment Google Cloud is demonstrating in launching this unprecedented $750 million ecosystem is further proof of why Kurian’s company richly deserved its elevation to the #1 spot on the Cloud Wars Top 10 earlier this year. (Please see Google Cloud Surges to #1 on Cloud Wars Top 10; Oracle Jumps to #2, Microsoft Slips to #3.)

Community Summit North America is the largest independent innovation, education, and training event for Microsoft business applications delivered by Expert Users, Microsoft Leaders, MVPs, and Partners. Register now to attend Community Summit in Nashville, TN from October 11-15.

Here’s Kevin Ichhpurani, president of Google Cloud’s global ecosystem, on why the company is enhancing and intensifying its go-to-market efforts in parallel with the company’s remarkable pace of agentic AI tech innovation:

Our partners play a critical role in enabling the Agentic Enterprise, and today we are also announcing new resources, technologies, and deep technical partnerships to ensure we offer customers the industry’s most capable partner ecosystem for the agentic era, including:

  • A $750 million partner fund for agentic development applicable across global consulting firms, software partners, and our channel partners.
  • New ways for customers to deploy partner agents in Gemini Enterprise.
  • Deeper and more technical partnerships with global consulting firms to support customers, including with new teams of Google forward deployed engineers.
  • Integrating Gemini models more deeply into enterprise platforms from Palantir, Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow, and more.
  • More AI-powered features in Google Cloud Partner Network to help our partners deliver high quality services.

And in today’s AI-obsessed business world, what are Google Cloud’s priorities for the $750 million its pumping into its partner ecosystem? Here’s how Ichhpurani framed it:

This funding will support a wide range of activities including:

  • Hands-on support for software companies to build AI agents into their products with the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and bring them to market through our Agent Marketplace and through the new Agent Gallery in Gemini Enterprise.
  • Expert Google forward deployed engineers (FDEs) who will partner with major systems integrators to help their customers solve deep technical challenges and deploy Google AI more rapidly.
  • Deployment and usage incentives to help services partners thrive in the agentic era.
  • Training, technical development initiatives, and workshops to help partners build and deploy agents for customers using Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.

Final Thought

Tomorrow afternoon, we’ll gain some remarkable insights into exactly how well Google Cloud, Microsoft, and AWS are capitalizing on this surge in agentic AI momentum as all three powerhouses release Q1 numbers on April 29. What might we look for?

Well, judging by the recent past, Google Cloud is likely to deliver some of the most eye-popping numbers because in Q4, its revenue soared 48% to $17.7 billion. While both Microsoft Cloud and AWS posted excellent quarters, the huge spike from Google Cloud indicated that it has harnessed rising momentum among customers eager to race into the AI Economy.

I’m betting that Google Cloud will continue to outgrow both of its much-larger competitors at a blistering pace and deliver further evidence that it is the company best prepared to help businesses become agentic enterprises via both its technological prowess and its newly fortified (by $750 million) partner ecosystem.
