In episode 113 of the Cybersecurity Minute, I explore the worrisome integration of AI into cyber attacks by nation-states like China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia.

Register for Acceleration Economy’s Cloud Wars CEO Outlook 2024 Course, now available. Featuring exclusive interviews on strategy, AI, and customers with the CEOs of Cloud Wars Top 10 companies.

Highlights

00:32 — Microsoft and OpenAI recently shared that certain nation-states, namely China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia, are weaponizing AI in their cyber attacks and activities. The current use of technology by threat actors reveals behaviors consistent with attackers using AI as a productivity tool — i.e., it doesn’t necessarily do the malicious activity for you.

01:24 — The report talks about what malicious actors are doing: gathering intelligence about technologies, platforms, vulnerabilities, and high-profile executives; generating and refining scripts; generating social engineering texts, emails, and communications to be more effective, more luring, more compelling, more believable; and developing malicious code and techniques.

02:12 — Defenders need to go out there if they’re cybersecurity practitioners, CISOs, security organizations, or leading security organizations and build more efficiencies with AI and large language models (LLMs). They need to learn how to use these technologies for defensive purposes.

02:57 — We’re seeing a lot of the security community look to AI very cautiously. Suppose you’re not allowing your folks to build proficiencies and capabilities with these new technologies. In that case, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage — because we’re seeing that attackers are doing exactly that.
