Addressing the sustainability opportunity, Mastrandrea noted a lot of companies think that sustainability can detract from financial results. “There’s a preconceived notion that investing in sustainability can hurt your bottom line. That’s really not the case. This is an opportunity to transform and rethink business processes. We’ve had a ton of innovation happening” at Microsoft as a result of sustainability initiatives, Mastrandrea says.
Everyone recognizes that technology and innovation will have to be leveraged to meet sustainability goals, especially when you think about not just reducing carbon but removing it. “If you can look at it as a way to be transforming and innovating, it’s an enormous economic opportunity for business.”
