In this News Desk interview, Tom Smith speaks with Janina Nakladal Bauer, Global Director of Sustainability, Celonis, at the process mining company’s Celosphere 2022 conference in Munich, Germany. The two discuss products, partnerships, and co-creation as it relates to Celonis’ sustainability initiatives.
Highlights
01:07 — What areas of responsibility does Bauer have within Celonis? Bauer is responsible for the overall sustainability strategy and program at Celonis. The company’s sustainability program focuses on two key elements:
- How the company can operate in a sustainable way
- Working with customers to assist them in becoming more sustainable by using the Celonis execution management system (EMS)
02:02 — How will Celonis’ new sustainability applications benefit customers?
02:15 — For the last several years, Celonis has been working with customers to understand their sustainability goals and challenges. The company noted three challenges:
- Organizations are working in silos
- Sustainability data is unorganized
- Lack of action
To tackle these challenges, Celonis developed targeted sustainability applications in congruence with its EMS and identified two areas that they wish to target: supply chain and procurement.
03:35 — The two sustainability applications Celonis launched are Supplier Spend Management and Shipping Emissions Reduction Application. The target of these apps is to help organizations operationalize their sustainability goals in procurement and shipping processes.
04:55 — What is the role of Celonis’ partner ecosystem in sustainability efforts?
05:10 — Partner and customer input have been a crucial part of the sustainability vision of Celonis. These applications cannot be developed alone; they heavily rely on data, which comes from various partners. For the two sustainability applications Celonis recently launched, they relied on three partnerships:
- EcoVadis
- IntegrityNext
- Climatiq
06:32 — How do the new sustainability applications coincide with the overall sustainability vision of Celonis?
07:00 — In today’s world, a high-performing company is one that is efficient and sustainable; this must be the future of companies. Sustainability requires improving multiple processes altogether. The first step in accomplishing sustainability goals is to ensure it is not a siloed aspect of the business. Business execution must go from “2D to 3D — not just with the product.” 3D business execution includes:
- Cost
- Revenue
- Sustainability
08:03 — How will sustainability efforts play out in 2023?
08:34 — At the start of 2020, many were quick to call it “the decade of action,” says Bauer. Two years into this decade, she feels there is still much more action to be taken. Something that will be crucial in the next year is process-driven sustainability. This way, organizations can focus on operations and immediate impacts without losing sight of sustainability initiatives.
