Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder Bob Evans. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud.
In this Cloud Wars Minute, Bob Evans discusses the outstanding question of who is the cooler company now — Oracle or Salesforce?
Highlights
00:10 — Two of the leaders who have helped to drive the greatest growth market the world has ever known are Larry Ellison of Oracle and Marc Benioff of Salesforce. Over the last month, the leaders — and their companies — have taken two very different directions. Who is the cool company now?
00:34 — Up until the last quarter, Marc Benioff and Salesforce have enjoyed a 23-year-long run of extraordinary success. In many instances, Benioff has taken his shots at both Oracle and SAP, claiming that they are backwards. As he would put it, “let them run all the unimportant stuff.”
01:07 — This has dramatically shifted in the last few weeks, as both companies released their quarterly earnings. Salesforce has seen a dramatic decrease in its growth and revenue rates, after the announcement that its Co-CEO, Bret Taylor, and Slack CEO, Stewart Butterfield, are leaving the company.
02:10 — Benioff is now stating that remote work environments contribute to the lack of productivity from Salesforce employees, which directly contrasts his previous statements that “the pandemic has changed everything” for the company.
02:40 — At the same time, Oracle’s growth rate is surging — its infrastructure and applications businesses are growing with over 40% growth rates. Oracle’s market cap is now 70% higher than that of Salesforce.
03:02 — Oracle’s culture has shifted after the company took on the mission of transforming and automating the healthcare industry. Oracle employees want to come to work now.
03:29 — Unlike the unstable events taking place at Salesforce, Oracle’s Safra Catz and Larry Ellison have worked together closely over the last 23 years, demonstrating a remarkable partnership. Catz was just named the Cloud Wars CEO of the Year.
04:27 — With all of this in mind, who is the cool company now?
