In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, I shed some light on a partnership between Workday and AWS, along with some great financial trivia related to it.

Highlights

00:12 — Number seven on the Cloud Wars Top 10 is Workday. At its Rising event last week, it announced it was pairing up with AWS to deliver lots of artificial intelligence (AI) services directly through the Workday platform over to developers.

01:07 — In this new set of announcements, developers are able to access a number of AWS API services via Workday’s Extend platform. Developers working on different AI projects within the Workday environment can now tap into a lot of AWS AI services with the confidence that will all be done securely and up to Workday’s standards.

02:30 — Now, about my trivia. On the stage at Rising, there was a discussion between Workday co-CEO Carl Eschenbach and AWS vice president of technology Matt Wood. Eschenbach said that when Wood started at AWS, 13 years ago, it had a revenue of about $500 million. Today, it’s about 90 billion.

03:18 — Wood said thanks for mentioning. He said he looks back at the beginning of the Workday-AWS relationship almost 11 years ago and remembers the first monthly bill AWS sent to Workday — a grand total of $38.31. The audience got a pretty good kick out of that. And Aschenbach said, “Maybe we can get the bill going back down in that direction.” I think that’s not likely to happen.

03:50 — Great to see these developing, widening, deepening relationships across the Cloud Wars Top 10 bringing new AI technologies and opportunities to customers who just can’t get enough of this.
