Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily cloud news and commentary show. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the cloud.
In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, I discuss the exciting new developments from SAP, including its launch of the SAP Business Data Cloud and the role it plays in transforming the tech industry.
Highlights
00:14 — SAP has made a big step forward in helping its customers. This launch by SAP of its Business Data Cloud changes the way we ought to look at applications and the category of applications vendors. Now, I think applications are going to exist to feed AI initiatives.
01:34 — SAP has put together these four pieces like the Four Horsemen of business transformation. It has its SAP Business Suite, which is what it’s now calling its Cloud ERP Suite. Then the Business Technology Platform. It’s got SAP Business AI. It’s got SAP Business Data Cloud.
02:45 — As you look at what an applications vendor is and the value of that, I think it all used to be at the application level. Now, I think it has to have these other places. You’ve got to be a platform player, you’ve got to be a data player, you’ve got to be an agent and AI player in all of this.

03:43 — The applications go from being sort of the top dog to being part of the food chain that yields the data that powers the AI, that runs the business, that creates the innovation that makes customers successful. That’s the big difference.
04:10 — A big part of this Business Data Cloud announcement was a partnership with Databricks that SAP was very excited about. It said, “It’ll help us on a number of levels. They’re the great data engineering platform, and it’s going to be a big part of this, and it’ll help us, SAP, work with SAP customers here on not only SAP data, but also non-SAP data.”
