Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder Bob Evans. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud.
This episode is sponsored by “Selling to the New Executive Buying Committee,” an Acceleration Economy Course designed to help vendors, partners, and buyers understand the shifting sands of how mid-market and enterprise CXOs are making purchase decisions to modernize technology.
In this episode, Bob reviews the updated rankings of the Cloud Wars Top 10, with Google Cloud moving up to the #2 spot.
Highlights
00:12 — Google Cloud has moved up to the #2 spot, shifting Amazon’s AWS down to #3. When Bob started the Cloud Wars Top 10 around six years ago, Google Cloud was near the bottom, and it has steadily moved up in the ranks.
00:40 — The GenAI Revolution has given the cloud industry a boost. On a large scale, Bob suggests we’re seeing a “sharp” transition in “what the cloud is all about.”
01:29 — Bob refers to this new model triggered by GenAI as “the birth of the Innovation Cloud Era.” He believes Google Cloud has “all the pieces necessary to be able to move that forward.”
01:44 — Google Cloud discussed its approach to this at an event it had for customers recently called the “Google Cloud Executive Forum.” Bob thinks that Google Cloud has a strong handle on innovation and value for customers.
02:34 — The revenue of AWS right now is “almost three times bigger than Google Cloud’s,” Bob says. He takes a closer look at the growth rates of both AWS and Google Cloud:
- AWS: 37%, 33%, 27%, 20%, 16%
- Google Cloud: 44%, 36%, 38%, 32%, 28%
03:20 — In conversations that Bob had at the Google Cloud Executive Forum, he was “really taken” by them talking about “how it changes their culture, their outlook, their ability to try new things, their ability to grow, and most of all, to deliver fantastic experiences to customers.”
03:53 — Bob spoke with a top executive from Deutsche Bank, which he elaborates on in the Cloud Wars News article coming later today. The executive reported that the company will be infusing GenAI into every process running across all of Deutsche Bank.
04:10 — The CEO of Wendy’s said that it has helped the company to lean in, to iterate, and to be willing to fail fast.
04:24 — Additionally, Bob spoke with Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian who said that the GenAI Revolution is “one that is going to touch billions of people around the world; it’s going to have a phenomenal impact here,” Bob reports.
04:50 — Bob concludes that while AWS is still a remarkable force in the business world and tech sector, Google Cloud seems to be “more fully capable of leading the way into this new GenAI future” and the Innovation Cloud Era.
