For the majority of the workforce to have any agency in the AI Era, they need to understand the tools they will be asked to adopt. This is important on multiple levels.
Users need to grasp AI conceptually as well as practically to thrive in an AI-driven future and maximize the reach of the tools at their disposal. To that end, organizations, in tandem with AI tool releases, are focusing on AI upskilling to ensure the competency of the next generation of workers who will need to manage a hybrid AI-human workplace.
Working towards this goal, Microsoft has partnered with the Future Skills Organisation (FSO), a jobs and skills council funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. Together, they will launch the FSO Skills Accelerator-AI, which is described as “a new strategic partnership between employers, industry, and training providers to help close Australia’s AI skills gap.”

AI Agent & Copilot Summit is an AI-first event to define opportunities, impact, and outcomes with Microsoft Copilot and agents. Building on its 2025 success, the 2026 event takes place March 17-19 in San Diego. Get more details.
Nationwide Rollout
The new accelerator program will focus on learners within Australia’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) system, along with more than 30,000 VET educators and administrators. This initiative emphasizes collaboration with educators and industry representatives to co-design the necessary AI training and expedite outcomes.
Ultimately, the main goal of the FSO Skills Accelerator-AI is to integrate AI into national standards, establishing a benchmark for AI proficiency in Australia.
“From pilot to policy, this partnership sets a bold blueprint for national workforce transformation. By harnessing the collective expertise and leadership of industry, we’re not only preparing Australians for the jobs of tomorrow — we’re actively shaping the future of work itself,” said Rachel Bondi, Corporate Vice President SME Microsoft Asia and Independent Director at FSO.
“Microsoft is proud to support and enable this industry-led collaboration with Future Skills Organisation, helping to ensure every educator and learner gains access to practical, job-ready AI skills.”
Closing Thoughts
While Microsoft is not the only company in the Cloud Wars Top 10 investing in AI skills programs, it is the one I’ve seen the most prevalence in this area. Here’s a recap of some of the initiatives we’ve covered recently that Microsoft has either led or been involved in:
“Microsoft Invests in Skilling, Policies, and Partnerships to Scale AI Outcomes” — “Dating back to 2024 and throughout 2025, Microsoft has asserted leadership in defining the role of agents and copilots relative to the people who use AI technology but have to reskill in order to ensure their value in AI-centric businesses.”
“Microsoft’s Australia Investment Fuels Generative AI, Cloud, and Cybersecurity” — “The investment will focus on digital infrastructure, IT skills, and cybersecurity. The plan includes the establishment of a Microsoft Data Center Academy and an extension of the company’s global skills program to enable over 300,000 Australians to gain skills enabling them to excel in cloud and AI.”
“SAP Outlines Goals of AI Workforce Consortium That Includes Cisco, Microsoft, and IBM” — “Members of the consortium each have individual goals for the project but collectively, they hope to positively impact more than 95 million people globally within the next decade. Step one will be the production of a report providing recommendations for organizations committed to providing skills training in line with future AI developments.”
Unlike most companies in the Cloud Wars Top 10, Microsoft’s reach extends far beyond the enterprise and into the pockets and laptop screens of hundreds of millions of active users — and that’s just considering Microsoft 365. That’s why Microsoft should take the lead in this area; it is already at the forefront of AI innovation, rolling out tools like Copilot and integrating AI into hardware, search, email, and a wide range of business applications.
