Paul Swider is on location at the HIMSS23 Global Health Conference and Exhibition, which runs this week in Chicago. In this special “On Location” minute, Paul shares his impressions of a generative AI sub-conference on the first day of the conference, which reveals that there is a mix of urgency and non-urgency around the technology, depending on whom one is talking with.

Highlights
00:54 — Paul calls ChatGPT the first killer app for generative AI. He submits that any vendors that do not already have a very successful illustration of how they were using existing AI technology prior to the release of ChatGPT are “going to be in a little bit of trouble, and I don’t even think they see it,” he says.
01:06 — Paul isn’t saying that all artificial intelligence (AI) companies are going to become legacy AI companies, but that any companies that have been working with machine learning and AI earlier than six months ago need to pay attention.
01:40 — It’s key, and just another sign of how industries will be disrupted, but Paul points this out because at the beginning of some HIMSS sessions he has attended, “they were talking about it almost like it was a trend, like the AI tech bubble was going to burst.”
01:58 — When Paul went up to the mic at this session and asked for clarification: “I said, ‘Are you suggesting that ChatGPT, the first killer app for generative AI, is a fad? Or are you referring to the underlying GPT-4 and GPT-5 transformer networks? Which part are we all buying into?'” Once Paul asked that question, “their tune changed and all of a sudden, they were like ‘No, this is not a fad, it’s going to change everything….”
