Episode 7
In this episode: the Capital One data breach. Amid all the media buzz is a key question: was the breach Amazon and AWS’ fault, or was it Capital One’s fault? Wayne digs down to say that Capital One shoulders the blame – but also that they noticed the discrepancies and did their best to fix it quickly. As Wayne puts it, “hackers never sleep.” Since cyber-criminals will always be upgrading their technology and sharpening their tools, business leaders need to be diligent.
Zooming out a bit, Wayne and I discuss how companies should react to this high-profile breach. Wayne says that, with a few exceptions, no company should spend enormous sums on cybersecurity when they can buy preconfigured solutions for most of the standard problems they’re facing. Finally, Wayne gets real about the evolving nature of cyber-crime. For example, if hackers turned up everybody’s thermostat to 100 degrees during the middle of a heat wave, how many pets and how many people could they kill?
