In Episode 13 of Acceleration Economy Growth Swarm, John Siefert, Bob Evans, Tony Uphoff, and Scott Vaughan discuss innovation, acquisitions, and movement in the healthcare space.

Highlights

01 — Growth Swarm host John Seifert introduces the panel of Acceleration Economy analysts and today’s topic: healthcare in the cloud. Recent reports predict cloud computing in healthcare will reach $911 billion by 2028.

59 — The cloud has unearthed outdated industry models and given rise to incredible growth potential in each of these industries, particularly healthcare. Bob summarizes the collaborative innovations already gaining momentum in healthcare.

49 — Tony illustrates what makes healthcare especially ripe for cloud tech opportunities, with the sheer size of the industry and generally negative customer experiences being two primary examples.

41 — John recounts Google‘s Joe Miles’ comments from the Industry Cloud Battleground at Cloud Wars Expo, which focused on acquiring FitBit and delivering capabilities directly to the patient.

34 — Scott relates how $68 billion in investments over the past three years in the healthcare space hasn’t been spent efficiently. The industry failed to make the jump to telehealth for nearly three decades before a pandemic forced innovation in a matter of weeks.

31 — What holds healthcare back? Scott suggests “systematic” friction preventing the industry from making the leap forward.

10 — Healthcare includes a massive audience that should care that the broken system in place now is fixed. Tony outlines the focus cloud vendors have on helping co-creative partners better serve their respective customers.

03 — Customer-centricity is the wake-up call healthcare needs to reimagine itself in a way that serves patients.

44 — Bob suggests there are lots of people who care about fixing the industry, but perhaps invest their energy in the wrong things. He relates what happened in telemedicine and pharmaceuticals when the pandemic exposed the ability to innovate and transform an old, regulated industry.

21 — Scott turns the discussion to nurses, doctors, and frontline workers spending their careers aiming to fix this system internally only to suffer burnout.

16 — Bob describes how hospitals can become “more hospitable.”

17 — Tony looks at the latest changes in direct negotiations between Medicare and drug companies. There are increasing pressures to realign insurance and other aspects of healthcare with a customer-centric approach.

40 — John examines Microsoft‘s healthcare presentation at the Industry Cloud Battleground session, including how much of a difference improved tech and intelligence is already changing the experience for both physicians and patients.

40 — “Data is at the root of everything.” Data used to drive healthier lifestyles and direct guidance from doctors needs to be made accessible to patients.

11 — Changes in healthcare are changes to the quality of life for millions.
