In Episode 51 of the CXO2 Minute, Wayne uses a bet he made with a CISO as a jumping-off point to discuss how the C-suite should approach cybersecurity.

Highlights

01:07 – Wayne says that the inspiration behind this episode’s topic stems from a bet he made with a chief information security officer (CISO). A CISO bet him that in ten years, there would be a CISO-peer to a CEO, or a CEO would be reporting to a CISO, who would be reporting to a board. He says he took the bet.

01:47 – Wayne brings up the ever-present cyber risks, noting that they are “very real.” He describes the importance of disaster recovery and says although a disaster recovery plan may look good on paper, it may not always work out the way it was intended. There are many nuances in disaster planning, says Wayne.

03:15 – Modern cloud architecture creates more opportunities but also more nuances around disaster recovery. Wayne addresses project failure as another potential risk for C-suite members.

This episode of the CXO2 Minute is sponsored by Community Summit North America, the largest independent gathering of the Microsoft Business Applications ecosystem taking place October 10-13 at the Gaylord Palms in Orlando, Florida. With 500+ Dynamics 365 & Power Platform sessions and over 300 speakers, this event is a must-attend for Microsoft customers. Go to summitna.com for more details.

04:04 – Wayne defines the threat that operational risks pose. In general, he advises that CEOs consider cybersecurity but also think about the other risks. He says that technology offers opportunities in preventing and addressing these risks.

05:07 – Security is important, but Wayne says “good security doesn’t create a product, customer, or employee experience beyond what one can do.” He says he is a CIO that believes in cybersecurity but also believes “there is more to life than just playing defense,” and encourages CEOs, CFOs, and board members to focus on that.
