In episode 53 of the Cybersecurity Minute, Robert Wood explores how leaders can communicate effectively with their teams about a transition to multi-cloud.

This episode is sponsored by Acceleration Economy’s Digital CIO Summit, taking place April 4-6. Register for the free event here. Tune in to the event to hear from CIO practitioners discuss their modernization and growth strategies.

Highlights

00:21 — At previous workplaces, Rob has encountered resistance to multi-cloud. He shares his experience of getting a “death stare” from engineering colleagues, who saw multi-cloud as something that “sounds good on the surface,” but is a lot of work to maintain. They viewed multi-cloud as the proverbial rabbit hole that might be hard to get out of.

00:56 — Rob would like to focus on the “why” of multi-cloud. Technology portfolio owners need to understand what’s driving their multi-cloud decision, whether it be compliance, scalability, cost, team preferences, and so forth. You need to unpack and be crystal clear on your why.

01:17 — Once you are, Rob advises that you communicate with everyone on your team to get a consensus on why the change is occurring (and also to make sure they understand why). Clear communication helps ensure teams can commit together to the change, even if people don’t agree with the multi-cloud decision.

01:38 — Multi-cloud is potentially quite beneficial, but also potentially polarizing, especially within organizations where resources and teams are stretched. It’s critical that organizations put their effort where it counts the most.
