“Sadin on Digital” episodes explore the fast-changing and high-stakes world of digital business. Wayne Sadin and I focus in particular on what CEOs and boards must do to lead their companies successfully into the Digital Age. Today, we hear Wayne’s take on the key IT strategy for coping with COVID-19 disruptions today, and what comes next for business technology.
Episode 14
In this episode: The world has changed. Wayne believes that when it comes to business and technology, there’s going to be a clear dividing line between pre-COVID and post-COVID worlds. When things go back to “normal,” are businesspeople going to want to meet in person, as before, versus meeting virtually?
I ask Wayne to share his thoughts on how IT departments should be thinking about strategy amid the COVID-19 crisis today, and also looking ahead to the future. When it comes to heavy technical debt, Wayne says, you’re not going to fix it in the middle of this crisis. After all, the worst time to acquire a new skill is in the middle of a gunfight. Instead, IT leaders should adopt a process Wayne calls “patch, polish, perfect.”
Next, Wayne and I explore how the current work from home (WFH) revolution will forever change how companies use technology. We talk about software models that will likely endure beyond the crisis, like freemium access to certain apps, and how the rapid advancement in telemedicine is a canary in the coal mine in terms of the change that’s coming to other overly complex and highly regulated industries.
