Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder Bob Evans. The next three minutes are packed with insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud! Today’s Topic: Four Killer Cloud Revenue Numbers from Microsoft’s Fiscal Q1
Highlights
00:45 – Bob says that there are four categories of the cloud where Microsoft is showing incredible depth, strength and consistency: the growth rates for each are increasing over time, even as the revenue bases get larger and larger.
01:15 – These categories are: Commercial Cloud, which was growing at 31% five quarters ago and grew at 36% for this last quarter. Azure, which grew at 48% five quarters ago and is now at 50%. Dynamics 365, which grew at 38% five quarters ago, is now at 48% growth. And Office 365, which went from 21% five quarters ago to 23% growth today.
02:15 – Bob notes that this year, the percentage of Microsoft’s overall revenue that comes from cloud is nearly 50%. For the calendar year, that points to MSFT bringing in something like $80 billion in cloud revenue.
02:57 – Bob hopes that Amazon, Google Cloud, Oracle and other competitors will not try to imitate Microsoft, but continue to move into new areas and pursue their own strengths.
