Cropin, developer of a purpose-built industry cloud for agriculture that was previously featured in Cloud Wars Horizon coverage, was recognized this week by AWS among its 2022 Regional and Global AWS Partners of the Year at the big AWS re:Invent conference.

Cropin, based in Bengaluru, India, was awarded Public Sector Startup Partner of the Year, an award that recognizes the top provider of “innovative, mission-based wins.” More broadly, the awards from AWS recognize partners that are helping customers drive innovation and build solutions on AWS while embracing specialization, innovation, and collaboration.

“At a time when our planet is staring at food insecurity concerns and growing hunger, 2023 will be critical for governments and public sector enterprises worldwide to ensure access to affordable and nutritious food for all,” founder and CEO Krishna Kumar said of the award in a LinkedIn post.

“We are committed to enhancing global agriculture productivity and Cropin Cloud, the world’s first purpose-built industry cloud for agriculture, will immensely benefit from a strong ecosystem,” Kumar added. “We will continue to work with AWS to co-create a sustainable future.”

Cloud Wars Horizon readers were first exposed to Cropin a couple of months ago when we interviewed Kumar and Cropin CMO Sujit Janardanan. In that discussion, Kumar said he sees the farm as a factory and his company’s technology as the means to manage farms efficiently amid risks they face. “I took the same principle and said I’m going to make every farm on this planet profitable, sustainable, and predictable . . . the farm is always the core,” he said.

In fact, the 12-year-old company’s first milestone was a product called SmartFarm, which aimed to create standard operating procedures for every farm asset. Most recently, it announced Cropin Cloud, which it calls the world’s first intelligent agriculture cloud, designed to serve farming companies, seed companies, food processing companies, fertilizer manufacturers, financial service providers, government, and development agencies.

The AWS award is a high-profile win for Cropin as it expands its footprint and takes on bigger ag industry challenges.

More Cloud Wars Winners

Another company regularly highlighted on the Cloud Wars Horizon, Mongo:DB, was one of six AWS Marketplace Partners of the Year; those awards recognize partners with significant transactions in the AWS Marketplace.

Also among the Marketplace Partners of the Year is Snowflake, which is ranked No. 9 on the Cloud Wars Top 10 list of the leading cloud tech providers. (Cloud Wars Horizon companies are covered as disruptors with the potential to break into the Top 10.)

Also noteworthy among those companies earning recognition from AWS: IBM, which is one of five Innovation Partners of the Year that were awarded for delivering innovative consulting, professional, managed, and value-added resale services while demonstrating proof of delivering “outstanding customer experience.”

IBM is Number 10 on the Cloud Wars Top 10 and, as Bob Evans noted in a recent analysis, the reinvented company is creating billion-dollar businesses with AWS and Microsoft.

Salesforce, Number 4 on the Cloud Wars Top 10, was an ISV (independent software vendor) Partner of the Year, earning recognition for leveraging AWS services and partner programs to expand its software lineup.

Two other prominent companies on Cloud Wars Horizon — Couchbase and HYCU — also made a splash at AWS re:Invent.

Couchbase, a prominent developer of cloud databases, announced with AWS that the companies will work with customers to migrate workloads to the Couchbase Capella Database as a Service on AWS, and extend Capella App Services to run on AWS Edge Services. The expanded relationship aims to help customers run Capella on AWS and build applications that are always on and can extend anywhere — from cloud to edge and everywhere in between.

AWS officials said Couchbase’s database is helping customers innovate and rapidly build next-gen apps that support digital transformation efforts.

HYCU, the provider of hybrid and multi-cloud backup as a service, highlighted recent AWS-centric developments including:

  • It’s HYCU Protégé Free Tier for AWS offering
  • Fully Managed Data Protection on AWS, Free for Life (up to 1 TB of data)

An early customer of HYCU data protection for AWS, Auto Europe director of information technology Peter Doyon, said the HYCU technology addressed his firm’s need to use Amazon S3 as a multi-site backup target. “HYCU delivered native Amazon S3 support to ensure we have the confidence that our data protection needs are being met and available in the event of a recovery as quickly as possible,” Doyon said.
