Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder Bob Evans. The guest host of today’s episode is Aaron Back, who discusses Oracle. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud.

This episode is sponsored by “Selling to the New Executive Buying Committee,” an Acceleration Economy Course designed to help vendors, partners, and buyers understand the shifting sands of how mid-market and enterprise CXOs are making purchase decisions to modernize technology.

In this Cloud Wars Minute, Aaron Back discusses the rollout of Oracle’s new EU Sovereign Cloud.

Highlights

00:33 — Since the release of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as well as data privacy, security, and location, these things have been “top of mind” for many multinational companies. Challenges associated with these notions revolve around the management of data.

01:05 — Recently, Oracle announced its EU Sovereign Cloud, which aims to help commercial and public sector organizations with their geographical data needs. This is available across the 27 member states of the EU, and had 100+ cloud services available on the Oracle public cloud, with no premium fees for sovereign capabilities.

01:37 — The intent of this cloud service, explains Aaron, is to reduce the risks associated with data residency. These risks are often associated with security concerns, AI, LLMs, and the need for complex security policy tools to be put in place to govern that data.

02:04 — The official press release from Oracle states that, “Organizations have faced major challenges that prevented the use of existing generative AI offerings, including data residency, and regulatory requirements, preventing them from leveraging AI infrastructure in the public cloud, to develop models required for generative AI.” This reality, suggests Aaron, leaves many customers wondering, “How do we manage this data in this type of environment, and also understand the trustworthiness of the data, especially when it comes to generative AI?”

03:24 — Oracle is putting its “best foot forward” to lay down a foundation that addresses some of these challenges. Aaron says he is curious to see how this solution will work. How will AI, data governance, and security, work in multi-cloud environments?
