In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, I explore how Oracle’s new 23ai database integrates advanced AI, enhancing efficiency, security, and eliminating data silos.
Highlights
00:16 — Oracle has just released its newest database, Oracle Database 23ai. It’s the first time it’s put the AI letters at the end of one of their database products. That’s quite significant. Oracle is looking at this as a way to finally convince business customers it is better to have everything in a single database.
01:04 — Here’s what they’re trying to do with Oracle Database 23ai, and why I think this is going to spell a lot of trouble for vendors of single-purpose databases. 23ai, among other things with that in the name, obviously, is built for AI. There are some things going on that really boost developer productivity. I go into a lot more detail on this in a full-length article that we’ll have up later today.
02:06 —There’s also the chance here to enhance security. The biggest thing, perhaps out of all of this, is that it eliminates data silos, which is a subject that Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison got into in a video discussion that he did with Juan Loaiza, Oracle’s executive vice president for mission-critical database technologies.

03:24 — Customers can choose a lot of small, purpose-built, single-function databases, or they can go with one that pulls everything together. From Oracle’s perspective, customers are much better off using this all-in-one type of database that 23ai represents. Ellison said it all gets ultra-complicated when you create all these data silos, and there’s no reason to have to do this.
04:47 — Ultracomplicated is one of the last things businesses need today when they want to establish a culture where an AI mindset is pervasive. That can’t happen if you’re working, as Ellison says, in these ultra-ultra-complicated environments, where everybody’s spending more time than they need to figuring out how to approach this.
