In this Cloud Wars Minute, Bob Evans details how — and why — Amazon is leading the front in the machine learning (ML) wars.
Highlights
00:41 — As things heat up in the generative AI space, Bob finds it interesting that Amazon claims to be leading the ML — a close cousin of generative AI — war. Specifically, the company is claiming that “it is number 1.”
00:50 — In a recent shareholder’s letter, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy focused heavily on generative AI, ML, and large language models (LLMs). Relating to generative AI and LLMs, Jassy wrote that these technologies are “so transformative” that he could “write an entire letter just on them.” He detailed the ways that Amazon has been using ML extensively for the last 25 years, in its e-commerce recommendations, drones for Prime Air, Alexa, and more.
01:30 — Jassy also claimed that AWS has the “broadest machine learning functionality and customer base of any cloud provider.”
02:00 — “I think part of what Jassy’s doing here is…trying to couple the whole notion of machine learning and large language models very tightly with generative AI,” explains Bob. Essentially, he is trying to position Amazon and AWS as well-seasoned companies with a solid foundation laid for these technologies.
03:05 — Competition makes everyone better, suggests Bob. “It is the main factor that is driving this incredible innovation for customers.”
