Google’s Gemini 3 Signals a New Era of Multi-Modal AI

Google first launched its Gemini model family two years ago. This multi-modal model family has been getting incrementally better ever since, and now, Google has announced the latest iteration: Gemini 3.

The model is already live across the Google ecosystem: in AI Mode for Google Search, in the Gemini app, in AI Studio, in Vertex AI, and in Google Antigravity (don’t worry, we’ll come back to that one later).

“Like the generations before it, Gemini 3 is once again advancing the state of the art,” said Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. “In this new chapter, we’ll continue to push the frontiers of intelligence, agents, and personalization to make AI truly helpful for everyone.”

The reception has been outstanding. Even Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff took to X to praise the technology, stating, “I’ve used ChatGPT every day for three years. Just spent two hours on Gemini 3. I’m not going back.”

So, what does Gemini 3 offer, and what accounts for this significant leap?

Introducing Gemini 3

Its development team describes Gemini 3 as “the best model in the world for multi-modal understanding.” It has been optimized for the agentic AI Era and for developers working in the vibe coding space. Currently, Gemini 3 Pro is in preview, while Gemini 3 Deep Think, which features enhanced reasoning, is only accessible to safety testers.

When compared to Gemini 2.5 Pro, Gemini 3 Pro outperforms the previous model in every aspect. This increased power and performance result in a more nuanced experience, providing concise answers with less unnecessary padding.

Google has identified three core functions for Gemini 3: learn, plan, and build — anything. Regarding its learning capabilities, the model can synthesize knowledge from various sources, including text, images, videos, audio, and code. To illustrate the breadth of its learning abilities, Google provides the example of uploading a video of a pickleball match. In this scenario, Gemini 3 can suggest improvements and develop a training plan to achieve those goals.

For planning, Gemini 3 integrates deep reasoning with enhanced tool use to develop and execute more intricate multi-step workflows on behalf of users. Regarding building, Gemini 3 provides advanced functionality for autonomous development of vibe coding and agentic AI, handling complex prompts with ease.

Along with Google AI Studio, Vertex AI, Gemini CLI, and third-party platforms like GitHub, Gemini 3’s build features can also be leveraged through Google’s new agentic development platform, Google Antigravity.

AI Agent & Copilot Summit is an AI-first event to define opportunities, impact, and outcomes with Microsoft Copilot and agents. Building on its 2025 success, the 2026 event takes place March 17-19 in San Diego. Get more details.

Google Antigravity

Antigravity is an agent-first development platform that leverages a combination of Gemini 3’s state-of-the-art reasoning, tool use, and agentic coding capabilities to transform “AI assistance from a tool in a developer’s toolkit into an active partner.”

With Antigravity, developers will find an integrated development environment (IDE) that they are familiar with. However, in this case, AI agents within the platform have access to the editor, terminal, and browser, operating alongside human developers and even validating their own code.

Closing Thoughts

In an announcement blog post, representatives from the Gemini team stated, “Today we’re taking another big step on the path toward AGI and releasing Gemini 3.” That’s a bold claim.

Gemini 3 is indeed a significant step forward, and its integration into Google’s ecosystem demonstrates its flexibility and positioning as both a complex tool and a consumer-friendly assistant — or perhaps even a co-worker.

The advanced reasoning capabilities and incredible multi-modality, combined with the ability to understand limitless sources of knowledge, interpret them, and act autonomously on behalf of human users, truly feel like the cusp of artificial general intelligence (AGI) to me. Thankfully, Google has also considered the importance of this significant advancement by conducting rigorous safety tests both in-house and with third-party institutions.
