Welcome to this AI Agent & Copilot Podcast, where we analyze the opportunities, impact, and outcomes that are possible with AI.

In this episode, I speak with Ben Beath, newly appointed chief AI officer at Avanade, who weighs in on AI transformation opportunities, the need for change management, and major new Microsoft AI products.

Highlights

Core Objectives and Startup Lessons (00:54)

Beath’s primary mandate is translating AI into measurable value for both clients and Avanade itself, accelerating practical adoption across business operations. This spans client growth, internal transformation and ensuring every role at Avanade is AI-enabled.

Through several startup leadership roles, Beath learned and will apply a bias toward shipping products; he says “adoption is the product,” meaning an AI agent or AI feature that no one adopts has zero value. Customers increasingly need to focus on ROI, moving beyond technology metrics to ensure value from token investments.

Business Transformation, Process Redesign (06:48)

Bolting AI onto old, linear processes designed for a pre-AI world limits its potential. Customers should prioritize process redesign first, operating models and organizational structures second, agentic automation third, then platforms. AI inference and reasoning disrupt traditional linear flowcharts, shifting the human role toward exceptions, judgment, and relationships. There can be a data challenge when transforming: AI can only reason as well as the data it can access. Most clients currently sit in the middle of the curve between experimentation and true transformation at scale.

People, Culture, Change Management (11:47)

Change management is a frequent bottleneck because AI adoption is fundamentally a people problem rather than a technology problem. Employees must shift from personal productivity tasks like summarizing or drafting emails to orchestrating work — designing, directing, and correcting the work of AI agents. Moving away from traditional classroom training toward hands-on coaching within the context of actual daily jobs (a hands-on “player coach” model), led by power users and executive sponsors, is a winning model.

Microsoft Work IQ and Autopilot (15:29)

Beath discusses the latest developments around Work IQ and support for key Microsoft business apps.. Work IQ fills a critical gap by building a semantic model from platforms including Dynamics and Power Apps. It allows AI to move from knowing about meetings to genuinely understanding how the business runs. The accuracy of agent answers relies on clean configurations of systems and data. Years of configuration debt in CRM or ERP apps risk becoming AI debt if not maintained.

Microsoft Autopilot represents a major shift from a prompted assistant to a digital teammate assigned work with its own identity, memory, workspace, and recurring responsibilities. Giving agents identities makes them governable (with explicit permissions, audit logs, and tracking) and elevates management questions around accountability, review, and autonomy levels.

Navigating Enterprise Risk and Governance (20:52)

Enterprise leaders can control concrete, manageable risks—such as data visibility, agent boundaries, accountability, and emergency stop mechanisms—rather than getting stuck on macro, doomsday scenarios that are not in their control. Governance should be engineered directly into AI builds (via least privilege access, observability, and human-in-the-loop design). Autonomy should not be granted on day one; it must be earned in stages as trust is established.

2026 Technology Highlights (24:08)

2026 has been marked by AI moving past clever chat windows into grounded, governed digital teammates connected to systems of record. Exciting advancements allowing advanced, powerful models to run on local hardware, solving downstream issues related to data security, intellectual property control, and cost without needing the absolute latest frontier model for every task.
