Welcome to this AI Agent & Copilot Podcast, where we analyze the opportunities, impact, and outcomes that are possible with AI.

In this episode, I speak with Will Hawkins and Kenny Mullican to get their impressions and highlights from last week’s AI Agent and Copilot Summit in San Diego.

Highlights

Lessons Learned (1:10)

Mullican says the biggest lesson is that AI has moved beyond experimentation to operationalization, focusing on real data, processes, and business outcomes. He emphasizes the importance of embedding AI into business operations to create measurable leverage, such as better decisions, faster execution, and improved productivity. The event introduced him to new ideas, particularly Microsoft’s Fabric data agents, which he plans to explore further.

Hawkins’ take: AI is no longer a pet project but is becoming integral to business operations, deriving its value from its place in the workflow. Agents are essential for reformatting information and solving bottlenecks in business processes, both for customers and internally.

Microsoft Insights (5:05)

Hawkins mentions that Microsoft is not favoring one AI vendor over another, focusing on the latest and most useful technology for their customers, whether it’s from Anthropic, OpenAI, or other innovators. Mullican also discusses the importance of Microsoft’s embrace of different AI tools, how using multiple AI tools is beneficial to customers, and Microsoft’s strong position based on its extensive enterprise software stack.

Microsoft Challenges, Opportunities (8:50)

Mullican mentions the need for more cohesiveness and clarity in Microsoft’s AI tools, as users can get confused by the different tools and their functionalities. He provides examples of technical glitches that can hinder user adoption, such as limitations in creating emails or calendars within the Copilot in Outlook.

Hawkins echoes Mullican’s sentiment about the need for better interoperability between Microsoft’s AI tools, such as Copilot Studio, Foundry, and Agent Framework. He notes that Microsoft continues to make progress on improving interoperability.
