Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily cloud news and commentary show. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the cloud.

Kieron Allen guest-hosts today’s episode, and he analyzes a Samsung-Google Cloud partnership that results in generative AI (GenAI) functionality on smartphones.

Register for Acceleration Economy’s Cloud Wars CEO Outlook 2024 Course, now available. Featuring exclusive interviews on strategy, AI, and customers with the CEOs of Cloud Wars Top 10 companies.

Highlights

00:17 — Samsung and Google Cloud have joined forces to add generative AI functionality from Google Cloud to the Samsung Galaxy 24 Series smartphone, putting this technology into the pockets of millions of users worldwide.

00:36 — Samsung will deploy the Gemini Pro multimodal model as well as Imagen 2 on Vertex AI via the cloud. Users will be able to summarize content on Samsung native apps, such as notes, voice recorder, and keyboard, and experience next-generation photo editing functionality.

01:11 — Samsung will also test Gemini Ultra, Google’s latest and most proficient AI model. The S24 series will also use Gemini Nano, an LLM for on-device tasks. Two things to watch: how Apple reacts in an iPhone context and how having GenAI on their phones prompts users to expect those capabilities to be as broadly available as possible.
