In this Digital CIO Summit moment, excerpted from the digital event which took place from April 4-6, John Siefert, Bob Evans, and Lev Gonick, CIO, Arizona State University (ASU), discuss how ASU’s information technology (IT) team focuses on engagement, which is a huge part of the university’s mission and a reason that IT engineers are inspired to join the team.

Highlights

00:05 — Gonick explains that at ASU, “almost everything we do, we always say ‘technology in the service of.’ We use the language ‘in the service of’ so as to not forget that there’s not actually technology for the sake of technology.”

00:28 — Part of the reason that ASU has been successful in its cloud journey is that the team gives its engineers great opportunities to play with tools in a non-traditional way. Gonick notes that “we are a very non-traditional IT organization . . . we’ve got essentially a corps of engineers that supports the full breadth of the organization . . . not the traditional siloed approach to organizational allocation of human talents.”

00:57 — Most of the IT engineers at ASU are attracted to the mission of the institution. Engagement is a critical part of the IT team’s mission, which is why ASU’s IT team completely redeveloped the mobile app for students.
