Welcome to Episode 49 of the Cloud Wars Horizon Minute — featuring news and commentary hosted by Acceleration Economy analyst Tom Smith. Each episode provides insights into one or more Innovation Accelerators on the Cloud Wars Horizon. This episode focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), more specifically, on a new report and set of recommendations on how to drive high business impact with the technology.

Highlights

00:50 — One commonality across lots of new software hitting the market is the developer’s positioning that its software is using some combination of AI or machine learning (ML) to make it perform optimally and deliver great business results.

01:48 — A new report from IBM’s Institute for Business Value helps bring more clarity to AI/ML. The research is on AI-focused projects, not software that happens to employ AI/ML as part of its core functionality.

02:20 — Only 25% of large companies will have moved beyond pilots to have AI working in an operational setting at the end of 2022, IBM estimates. 38% are piloting or implementing while 37% are considering or evaluating.

02:52 — Not every application should be viewed as a candidate for AI; any decision should be based on whether a broader strategic initiative or business problem would benefit from AI enablement.

03:10 — AI shouldn’t be considered first and foremost as a way to reduce costs. IBM research finds that organizations consistently rank customer-centered growth as having the highest business impact from AI.
