In episode 111 of the Leadership Minute, I give some tips for how to get the most out of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) apps like ChatGPT.

Highlights

00:42 — To take generative AI to the next level, I ask the AI to pretend it is an expert in the area I need help with. That often falls into two categories for me: coaches and assistants. A coach might be a vendor negotiation expert, a cybersecurity ninja, or an IT career coach. Assistants might be an expert, event planner, social media maven, or travel agent.

01:44 — To get started, with generative AI, you can use publicly available tools. Common ones include ChatGPT, Bing Chat, Google Bard, and Anthropic’s Claude is another one. It’s important to choose a tool that suits your security needs.

02:23 — Start conversations with the AI by setting a role for it. “You are a technology vendor negotiation expert, I have a vendor contract expiring in a couple of months. I’d like to get a better rate if possible. . . “

03:24 — By framing your questions this way, you engage the AI in a helpful dialogue, making the process more intuitive and productive. My second big tip: Interaction with AI is often best handled as an iterative process, so you may need to go back and forth refining the responses to get closer to what you need.

04:47 — This method has greatly enhanced my job performance, saving time and sparking creativity. By engaging with generative AI in this manner, I overcome the daunting feeling of starting from scratch.
