Microsoft Introduces Agent Mode and Office Agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot to Power ‘Vibe Working’

Microsoft has introduced two new features to Microsoft 365 Copilot: Agent Mode in Office apps and Office Agent in Copilot chat. The company aims to introduce what it describes as “vibe working.” Inspired by “vibe coding,” this concept allows software developers to use AI tools to generate code through natural language, enabling outcomes that align more closely with their desired results, rather than following the more restrictive approach of line-by-line coding.

So, how will this play out in real-world workflows?

Human/Agent Collaboration

Ultimately, the direction of travel dictated by these two new features is a scenario in which humans and agents collaborate to develop office documents, presentations, and spreadsheets. Agent Mode is being launched across Excel and Word, with PowerPoint integration on the horizon. Office Agent is currently available for PowerPoint and Word and will also be coming to Excel.

In Excel, Agent Mode has been built on Excel artifacts and utilizes OpenAI’s most recent reasoning models. It opens the door to more advanced processes and deeper insights by generating outputs, evaluating results, and fixing inconsistencies.

In Word, Agent Mode works off prompts such as, and this is a Microsoft suggestion, “summarize recent customer feedback and highlight key trends.” The feature will then draft primary content and ask questions along the way to clarify that the output is what was desired, initiating a back-and-forth process until the desired result is achieved.

Office Agent in Copilot is driven by Anthropic LLMs and initiates a chat-first experience, allowing users to create presentations in PowerPoint and draft documents in Word, all through voice commands.

This capability enables users to create PowerPoint presentations and Word documents in a chat-first format. For example, Microsoft suggests the following prompts as examples:

Business Plan Prompt: Help my restaurant chain draft a pop-up kitchen plan in Philadelphia. The event must serve 200 guests, use only locally sourced ingredients, stay within a $10,000 food-cost budget, and comply with county health permits. Give me an 8-slide overview to help me through the planning process.

Retirement Savings Plan Prompt: I need to create a set of slides to share with my employees to encourage them to actively fund their retirement accounts. We’ve agreed to match a percentage of their contributions, but I’d like to increase the uptake of people participating in this program. Use a combination of numbers, visuals, and narrative/analogies to help.

Social Media Trends Prompt: Create a report evaluating the trends of influencer and social media advertising in the coffee industry.

Currently, Agent Mode in Copilot for Excel and Word is available through Microsoft’s Frontier program for customers with Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses, as well as for subscribers of Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium plans. Additionally, Office Agent is accessible through the Frontier program for Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium subscribers located in the U.S.

Closing Thoughts

Microsoft has the world’s largest test bed for agentic AI: Microsoft 365. It is cleverly utilizing this resource to not only improve the customer experience across the app suite but also to demonstrate the usefulness and efficiency of Copilot.

Microsoft’s shift to voice technology is well underway. I recently reported on the introduction of real-time Copilot avatars to accelerate the adoption of Copilot voice features. Now, with its enhanced agentic features in Copilot Chat, Microsoft is further cementing its position in the voice-to-agent-to-workflow domain. While many users are utilizing the ChatGPT voice function, Microsoft’s widespread platform availability, which allows users to access this voice-enabled interaction through many different channels, will likely position it as a leader in this emerging and highly influential space.
