Each month, “Ammirati on Innovation” episodes will look at ways that the disruptive-startup mentality is spreading beyond young entrepreneurs to big established corporations. Serial entrepreneur, venture capitalist and Carnegie Mellon B-school professor Sean Ammirati, who sits at the intersection of these high-change dynamics, provides insight.
Episode 12
In this episode: Sean and I talk about business leadership. We start with a quick dive into the co-CEO model, which was recently in the news given the departure of one of SAP’s co-CEOs on the heels of both Salesforce and Oracle reverting to a single-CEO model. As a mentor to founders and startup leaders, Sean has a unique perspective on the question of whether two CEOs are better than one.
Next, we talk about what changes Sean expects to see as businesses start to go back to “normal” following the upheavals of the COVID-19 crisis. From education to real estate to air travel, industries will “snap back” at very different speeds. And for those, like air travel, that are facing steeper challenges and slower snap-backs (in part due to the crisis, and in part their own bad decision-making), Sean sees opportunity.
Here’s the big question: which airline or real-estate companies will be able to implement a “Disney+ strategy,” to lift themselves out of the crisis through innovation and a startup mentality? With Disney+ recently announcing that they’ve achieved 50 million subscribers in just two quarters, there’s no arguing that the strategy works.
