Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder, Bob Evans. The next three minutes are packed with insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud! Today’s Topic: Get Ready for 1 Million Times More Data!
Highlights
0:25 – Guest host John Foley takes us back to 1997, when he attended a Microsoft event called “Scalability Day.” Microsoft wanted to demonstrate that Windows NT could manage enterprise workloads, so it created 1 terabyte data set – which was a lot of data back then. Fast-forward to today, and petabyte-size databases are the norm. A growing number of organizations have even begun to move into exabytes. An exabyte is a thousand times more than a petabyte – or a million times more than a terabyte.
1:25 – The non-stop data growth that’s taken place over the past 25 years is only accelerating today. And this opens the door to new and innovative database platforms that can help businesses scale their data capabilities.
2:00 – So, which emerging database vendors have a shot at this opportunity? John notes that we will be hearing from some of the new cloud-native database providers at Acceleration Economy’s Cloud Database Battleground on January 27, a digital event bringing together the top database minds from the vendor and analyst communities to debate the opportunities and challenges of data management in the cloud.
2:25 – John shares a final thought on data growth and scale: namely, that 25 years from now people may talking about yottabyes of data, which are a million times larger than the exabytes of today. The growth in data is just that rapid and dynamic—and you can hear much more about it at the Cloud Database Battleground digital event on January 27.
