You’re watching a top moment from the Cloud Wars Roundtable, featuring Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability. Acceleration Economy analysts Bob Evans, Aaron Back, Wayne Sadin, and John Foley joined Mark Kroese, Microsoft’s General Manager of Environmental Sustainability. Together, they discussed strategies and technologies that can help businesses measure, track, operationalize, and accelerate their sustainability initiatives.

Highlights

00:09 — Bob Evans introduces Mark Kroese, Microsoft’s General Manager of Environmental Sustainability.

00:34 — Mark shares that organizations can achieve up to 98% improved sustainability by moving their on-premises IT systems to the cloud.

00:56 — There are four levers when it comes to realizing those carbon-lowering improvements:

  1. IT operational efficiency: load balancing and maximizing server capacity
  2. IT equipment efficiency: hardware, software, algorithms
  3. Datacenter infrastructure efficiency: cement, steel, ensuring facility is a “green building”
  4. Datacenter power efficiency: renewable energy to run data centers

01:35 — If all of these avenues are leveraged, it’s possible to realize 98% improvement in IT sustainability.

01:42 — Little changes can go a long way. Migrating from on-prem systems to any cloud environment can improve efficiency from 40% to 60% at minimum.

01:58 — Once organizations have made the switch, Microsoft’s goal is to keep making the cloud greener and greener. “It’s a game of inches on the road to zero.”
