Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily news and commentary show, hosted by Cloud Wars Founder Bob Evans. The guest host of today’s episode, focused on Microsoft Fabric, is Wayne Sadin. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the Cloud.

In this episode, Wayne offers his first impressions of Microsoft Fabric, a platform that brings together components of Power BI, Azure Data Explorer, and Azure Synapse.

Highlights

00:12 — A few months ago, SAP launched SAP Datasphere, which it described as a “business data fabric.” Wayne notes that it “was a pretty impressive shot across the bow of some of these independent data analytics companies.” The product intends to offer a seamless experience across the entire data space in an easy-to-use, cloud-based fashion.

00:32 — With the release of Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft just “upped the ante.” Fabric is a set of components that Microsoft brought together in its Azure environment, which includes data engineering, data science, data warehouses, real-time analytics, and Power BI, all while operating on a data lakehouse embedded in Azure.

01:01 — Wayne suggests through Fabric, Microsoft “has taken the opportunity to leverage all those disparate pieces that they are so good at building, and put them together under one brand, with one set of interfaces that are going to make this very powerful.”

01:32 — For users that are already Microsoft clients, all of these “pieces” are going to come together into one platform. “This is a really powerful opportunity to get an integrated set of data tools that are pretty powerful.”

01:53 — Microsoft Fabric is still in preview mode; “it’s a very exciting set of developments from Microsoft that definitely upped the ante against the independent database and data analytics vendors, against all those separate tool vendors.”

02:47 — In closing, Wayne suggests that users who care about data ought to be taking a look at the latest development from Microsoft.
