Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily cloud news and commentary show. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the cloud.

This episode is sponsored by Acceleration Economy’s “Cloud Wars Top 10 Course,” which explains how Bob Evans builds and updates the Cloud Wars Top 10 ranking, as well as how C-suite executives use the list to inform strategic cloud purchase decisions. The course is available today.

In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, I explore Larry Ellison’s recent comments about how Oracle foresees more agreements between cloud vendors to create a true multi-cloud for customers.

Highlights

00:10 —There are big changes coming to the Cloud Wars in multi-cloud. Larry Ellison said Oracle’s intention is to interconnect to all the clouds because he thinks customers will demand that. This is a tremendous inflection point. The primacy of what customers want and need is beginning to supersede vendors’ self-interest

01:53 — Ellison said this interconnection may come as a surprise to his very good friend, Marc Benioff of Salesforce, but he’s convinced they will soon reach an agreement where Salesforce and Oracle clouds are intermingled.

02:14 — Ellison also made a point here about how this is a welcome end to the concept of a walled garden, where once a customer comes in and begins to use one cloud, they’re made to feel locked into that cloud. Along those lines, Ellison really skewered the notion of egress fees.

03:24 — The big story here is that someone of Ellison’s stature, with his track record, is coming out very publicly saying that we are going to get to a place where customers can use any clouds they want, seamlessly together. Industry vendors are going to have to learn to put aside their competitive battles and limited worldviews about what true multi-cloud is.

04:20 — For somebody of Ellison’s reputation and credibility in the industry, for him to be the big champion of this saying we’re going to do it with everybody is quite important.
