While all the major enterprise-apps vendors have attempted, to varying degrees, to help customers understand the interplay between apps and agents, Oracle has been doing the best job by far, with CEO Mike Sicilia adding great clarity last week during his company’s Q1 earnings call.
Ever since Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s awkwardly expressed his forecast that the rise of agentic AI would simultaneously trigger a “collapse” of enterprise apps that would be “hollowed out” by agents, business customers have been trying to figure out what the hell to do: preserve their massive investments in enterprise apps, rip and replace them all because Satya Nadella said they’re next to useless, or undertake a long and expensive project to re-architect their entire IT landscapes to be able to handle both apps and agents?
If you think I’m overstating the SaaSpocalypse threat, I’ve shared Nadella’s verbatim comments about the devastating impact he was expecting agents to have on the enterprise apps that have been running the global economy for the past several decades.
For the past 18 months, Oracle’s top applications execs have been refuting that premise while laying out their vision for how the new combination of apps plus agents can lead to much better outcomes for customers:

Building on that, here’s how Oracle CEO Sicilia presented the new apps/agents reality during last week’s Q1 earnings call (and for more on those Q1 results, please see Oracle Q1 Cloud Infrastructure Soars 121%, RPO Jumps 46% to $664 Billion).
Sicilia described how that synergy prioritizes optimal workflows over monolithic commands, elevates the work humans do, reduces costs while accelerating operations, and drives better outcomes while preserving data security and operational guiderails.
“We continue to see the power of application suites in the minds of our customers,” Sicilia said in his opening comments.
“They are investing in trusted, complete solutions that now seamlessly blend agents and applications together to run their businesses. The introduction of AI is an accelerator, not a replacement for packaged applications (emphasis added). As such, our decades of experience and expertise running business processes across every industry, in every geography for organizations of any size gives us the understanding of how to help them succeed.
“Before AI came along, application suites had already proven their effectiveness,” Sicilia said. “Companies had been able to increase their profit margins because end-to-end automation was standardized and efficient. Business processes proved to be much more effective than one-off custom solutions. But that did require organizations to follow workflows and processes as designed in the system, something that many struggle to achieve consistently across functions, teams, and regions.”
And here’s where Oracle’s carefully orchestrated fusion of agents and apps begins to pay off.
“AI changes this dynamic,” Sicilia said. “Rather than asking every employee to navigate and execute a process exactly as the system expects, AI agents can perform tasks using the organization’s established workflows and business rules. Employees then shift to overseeing agents, resolving exceptions, and applying human judgment where it matters most.
“And by combining applied AI with decades of sophisticated business rules, regulatory compliance, security models, data models, and customer configurations, we enable customers to continuously realize AI’s value while keeping their data secure and their operational guardrails intact.
‘This allows organizations to harness the power of our application suites more easily than ever before.”
Final Thought
If you thought I’ve overstated the confusion and delayed decisions caused by Nadella’s “hollowed out” remarks, take a look at this transcript of what he said on the BG2 podcast a couple of years ago from my May 12, 2025 analysis headlined Apps Apocalypse: Bill McDermott Joins Satya Nadella in Saying AI Agents Will Crush Applications:
“It’s a very very important question. The SaaS applications, or biz apps — let me just speak of our own Dynamics there — the approach at least we are taking is I think the notion that business applications exist — that’s probably where they’ll all collapse, right, in the Agent Era because if you think about it they are essentially CRUD [create, read, update, delete] databases with a bunch of business logic.
“The business logic is all going to these agents. And these agents are all going to me multi-repo CRUDs, right, so they’re not going to discriminate between what the back-end is. They’re going to update multiple databases and all the logic will be in the AI tier, so to speak.
“And once the AI tier becomes the place where all the logic is, then people will start replacing the back-ends, right?
“That’s what — it’s interesting: as we speak, we’re seeing pretty high rates of wins on Dynamics back-ends and the agents’ use. And we’re going to go pretty aggressively and try to collapse it all.”
