Acceleration Economy Editor-in-Chief Tom Smith is on location at Celonis World Tour 2023 today. In this video, Tom speaks with Wil van der Aalst, Chief Scientist at Celonis, who is often referred to as the “Godfather of Process Mining.”

In this video, Tom and Wil discuss key takeaways from product demonstrations, explore large language models (LLMs), and define object-centric process mining before sharing use cases.

Highlights

00:55 — One of the agenda items during Celonis World Tour is a product demonstration that brings together the key benefits of process mining and generative AI. Tom asks Wil to give some insights into this product demo. What key benefits — and limitations — should customers expect?

01:15 — Something that is lighting up in the industry is ChatGPT, a form of a large language model, explains Wil. He adds that Celonis is incorporating this technology into its own stack to make it easier for users to ask questions about process mining. “If people ask questions about their processes, we turn that into a process mining query. So we have our own PQL [process query language] that is like a query language to ask questions about processes.”

02:36 — This specific combination of process mining and generative AI will “lower the barrier, making it easier to use the system.” Wil explains that as these technologies develop further, they will assist in other process mining tasks, such as preparing data for process mining. However, general LLMs are not as effective as LLMs that are trained for specific organizations.

03:45 — Tom asks Wil how soon these developments will be available in a way that is specific to organizations. Wil explains that it will take some time to develop LLMs that are trained with a specific organization’s data.

04:50 — During the event, and in recent months, Celonis has spoken widely about object-centric process mining. What are some key benefits of this technology? “Object-centric process mining is basically changing process mining completely,” notes Wil. In essence, object-centric process mining serves as a single source of truth. “We are no longer extracting data for individual processes. We are extracting data as a single source of truth, describing all the events and all the objects that are relevant for a particular organization in a single model.”

06:22 — Wil shares an example of how object-centric process mining is being used to minimize flight delays at airports. There are many concurrent processes taking place at an airport; arrivals, departures, fueling the aircraft, unloading bags — if one of these processes fails, an entire flight is delayed.

07:42 — “So using object-centric process mining, you can create, let’s say, models that capture all of this complexity, of all of these different objects interacting with each other…You can look at it from any angle, at any point in time, in any way that you like.” In closing, Wil notes that this idea will become the “new normal” in the field of process mining because it is much more powerful than looking at a single process.
