In this Cloud Wars Minute, guest host Kenny Mullican delves into Currys strategic use of GenAI to boost colleague productivity, customer self-service, and future-proof its business.

Highlights

00:02 — Currys, a major UK electronics retailer, announced a partnership with Microsoft and Accenture to modernize its cloud infrastructure, supporting AI-powered initiatives. This collaboration is designed to enhance Currys’ operations, improve customer experiences, and boost employee productivity by integrating Microsoft AI technologies, including Azure OpenAI Services.

01:20 — Its initiative has four pillars. The first is colleague productivity. This pillar emphasizes improving the productivity of its employees, particularly those working in stores. By using AI tools like Microsoft Copilot, which is built on large language models, employees can access information more quickly and accurately.

02:08 — The second pillar is customer self-service and problem diagnosis. It’s using GenAI to empower customers to self-serve and diagnose problems with products, which is particularly useful in reducing unnecessary product returns, which can be costly and time-consuming for both the retailer and the customer.

02:53 — The next pillar is about looking beyond immediate applications and exploring how AI can be used in the future to drive value for the business. This includes experimenting with AI technologies that may not deliver immediate benefits but could be valuable in the long run. Currys is building its internal AI capabilities to explore these potential future uses responsibly.

03:30 — The final pillar is AI-enabled products and market leadership, centering on Currys’ role as a leading retailer in AI-enabled products. The company aims to position itself as the home of AI, educating customers on how to get the most from AI-powered products.

04:12 — So even though I’m not in the retail space, it’s exciting to look and see how a company is already taking advantage of GenAI in some unique ways that could be applied to other industries, such as manufacturing.
